Kiersten Conroy feels at home on the stage. It’s a revelation that first hit the PCS senior during Drama Club’s 2022 production of “Pippin.” The camaraderie and acceptance among her theater family has only grown her love for the lights. Whether it’s performing or providing support behind the scenes, Kiersten is planning a future in theater.
“Acting definitely gives me an escape from reality,” said Kiersten. “You can put away the things that happened that day and just focus on the character.”
In addition to “Pippin,” Kiersten also participated in productions of “Into the Woods” and “Mean Girls.” This year, she set her sights on portraying Dorothy in Drama Club’s spring production of “The Wizard of Oz.” She knew it would be a huge undertaking and didn’t want to fail in the iconic role. A highlight for Kiersten was working with the more than 30 elementary students who played the “Munchkins” in the production.
“Every time I perform with the younger students, I think of myself at that age. I hope they’ll see the theater community and become inspired to get involved,” she said.
On May 9, Kiersten felt nervous walking into the West Herr Auditorium Theatre in Rochester. She was surrounded by hundreds of students from throughout the region that share the same passion – the performing arts. The event that brought all of these talented students together was the Stars of Tomorrow Recognition Ceremony. Since its creation by the Rochester Broadway Theatre League (RBTL) in 1999, Stars of Tomorrow has provided recognition to high school stage productions and students in the performing arts. Kiersten performed a selection from “The Wizard of Oz” with fellow castmates Annabelle Buckley, Gio Muolo, Noah Korn, and Keira Hyland.
“Surrounded by students who love theater, I felt like I could perform without being judged,” said Kiersten.
While the evening proved to be a successful one for the PCS Drama Club, it was monumental for Kiersten. She was recognized with an Achievement in a Leading Role Award for her portrayal of Dorothy. RBTL adjudicators were in the audience during the March shows of “The Wizard of Oz” and scored Kiersten highly in the four categories of vocal, dancing, acting, and backstage safety.
“For me, just being in this theater community means a lot,” she said.
In the fall, Kiersten will take her passion to SUNY Geneseo to study Musical Theatre. She’s not only excited to hone her acting skills, but also learn about the work that goes on behind the scenes. Whether it’s in the starring role under the bright lights or providing support backstage, Kiersten has learned that every cast and crew member makes a difference.
“No matter how small the role, you can still be big in character,” she said.
